ChuChai is a Thai restaurant that's just a little bit different from the rest. The uniqueness of ChuChai lies in the way its chefs create delicious meat, fish and seafood tasting dishes that are all derived from plant-based foods. This is just one of the reasons so many people have come to the restaurant night after night since it opened in 1997 to treat themselves to this refined and refreshing cuisine.
Lily Sirikittikul grew up in Thailand surrounded by restaurateurs and came to Quebec with her family in 1992, after detouring through the United States. "When I came here for the first time, it was summer, it was so beautiful, and I loved it! The European aspect...", recalls Lily, referring to their decision to settle in Montreal.
She became a vegetarian in the mid '90s and, with her partner at the time, thought about opening "a nice restaurant to sit and enjoy the evening." She decided to travel to Asia to study the art of recreating the texture of various animal protein from plant-based food. When she returned to Montreal, she carefully tested everything she had learned so she could open ChuChai.

very good and healthy food
Astonishing how the chicken, duck and shrimp look, feel and taste real! Great place, no blasting music, fine thai cuisine. Will definitely renew the experience.

Chu Chai offers vegan Thai food in the Plateau. Their duck salad with hot chili and mint leaves taste like duck, but it’s all faux meat! If faux-meat isn’t for you, you can opt for their vegetable or tofu-rich dishes. Their neua sam rod “beef” is similar to General Tso chicken, and their panang neua “beef” is saucy and so full of herbs and flavours you’ll think you’re actually eating meat. Chu Chai is the perfect spot to bring that vegan friend without sacrificing taste!
View this Smart ListChu Chai has been a Saint-Denis fixture for decades. The food at this vegan Thai restaurant has to be seen to be believed. The menu has all the typical Thai restaurant offerings - crispy duck, fish croquettes and dumplings in peanut sauce - but in each, the animal protein is replaced with an extremely convincing vegan duplicate. It's truly a marvel of creativity. The food is excellent, and the kitchen is willing to adjust spice levels to your preference. The only caveat is that soy and seitan feature prominently, so if you're avoiding either, this might not be the restaurant for you.
