How can you go so very wrong? Yudyta’s served us the very worst meal we have had in a tremendously long time! When checking out The Forks one wintery weekday, we stopped for a quick nosh at Yudyta’s – my travelling companion was determined to have some good old Ukrainian food while in Winnipeg. While the prices seemed inflated, we both ordered combination plates, consisting of 4 perogies, 2 cabbage rolls, a container of coleslaw and an additional chunk of kielbasa or garlic sausage to round out the meal – at a cost of nearly $17.00 for the two plates. It was awful. I have eaten many, many perogies, consumed vast quantities of cabbage rolls, and enjoyed an unseemly amount of garlic sausage in my lifetime – some wonderful, and some, well…medicore in taste and quality. However, Yudyta’s versions were uniformly awful. Everything was as cheaply made a possible and the sizes were meager. Perogies, cabbage rolls and garlic sausage are essentially peasant food – inexpensive, but if made with love – divine! Apparently even using salt or pepper for flavouring is too extravagant for this restaurant. The perogies consisted of a leaden dough covering and a scant slathering of indeterminate filling. The finger-size cabbage rolls tasted sour. The garlic sausage was missing the garlic, and consisted of ground up mystery meat and filler. I cannot even describe the coleslaw. The fried onions offered as a topping were essentially raw. The sour cream provided for the perogies was the highlight of this meal. Bottom-line? Skip this sad purveyor of ersatz Ukrainian cuisine. It was cheaply made, tasteless, overpriced and just plain nasty. Shame on you, Yudyta!
