Why everyone should own a fashionable trench coat

January 29, 2015

Few clothing items are more practical or stylish than a fashionable trench coat. Invented during World War I, it’s a modern wardrobe staple for men and women.
Trench coat origins

As its name suggests, the coat was invented in the trenches during World War I. First worn by Allied soldiers, it served as a military uniform.Following the War, a British designer popularized a version of the trench coat for civilians, which was an instant success.

Since then, although the design is still based on the original version, fabrics have been modified for added comfort. While the original trench coat was made of gabardine, today’s versions are available in a myriad of fabrics including cotton, polyester, wool and cashmere. Tight-weaving techniques such as twill are still used, but usually a coating substance is applied to the fabric to render it weather-proof and water-resistant.

A true classic

Because the reinvented trench coat was a hit, styles were created for men, women and children. Today, hundreds of brands and designers offer their own variation of the iconic coat.

  • A trench coat is lightweight, water-resistant and usually falls below the knee.
  • Trench coat lengths vary between 95 cm and 115 cm, and should be selected and tailored according to the wearer’s height and preferred coverage.
  • Most trench coats are belted, double-breasted and incorporate exterior storm flaps and a wide collar for protection from bad weather and high winds.

Like most garments, over the years the trench coat has evolved into different styles and fits. The classic trench coat is beige, but can be found in a variety of colors.

Why choose a trench coat?

  • Lightweight and long, men can wear it over a suit and women can wear it over a dress. Its versatility is what makes the trench one of the most practical coats ever invented.
  • In temperate climates, where between-season dressing can be a challenge, a trench coat saves the day. When the temperature drops, a trench coat can be topped off with a scarf, thereby extending the period of time you can go without wearing a winter coat.
  • Winterized trench coats are constructed of thicker weaves and fabrics and are long enough to cover the back and most of the legs.
  • Stylists agree that if you buy only one coat, a trench is definitely your best option. Furthermore, sticking to a classic cut and neutral beige will ensure the item never goes out of style.

If you’re budget permits, allow your imagination to flow with the seasons. Dare to deviate from the old-school design by experimenting with bold colours and different fabrics.
