Trench coat origins
As its name suggests, the coat was invented in the trenches during World War I. First worn by Allied soldiers, it served as a military uniform.Following the War, a British designer popularized a version of the trench coat for civilians, which was an instant success.
Since then, although the design is still based on the original version, fabrics have been modified for added comfort. While the original trench coat was made of gabardine, today’s versions are available in a myriad of fabrics including cotton, polyester, wool and cashmere.
