Kitsilano (or Kits as it’s known to locals) is one of Vancouver, B.C.’s most vibrant communities to live and visit. The picturesque neighbourhood offers scenic parks, an internationally renowned city beach, and a wealth of workout studios, shops and restaurants. The laid-back vibe makes it a perfect area to stroll, people-watch and sightsee. Here’s how to spend an ideal Sunday in Kitsilano. [Photo credit: iStock.com/MajaPhoto]

Spend a perfect Sunday in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood

Morning

First things first: coffee. Vancouverites are mad for their java so why not start your day by stopping into Arbutus Coffee at West 6th and Arbutus, a community landmark since it was first built in 1907. Originally a grocery store, the quaint heritage building maintains its boomtown facade and corner entrance. The daytime menu features fresh coffee and healthy baked goodies, including quiches, paninis, pies and more. While you sip and savour, gaze at the homes on West 6th; these California-style bungalows and cheerful exteriors pay homage to the area’s artist-filled past.

After you’re properly caffeinated, join the locals for a Sunday morning grocery run. This Vancouver neighbourhood is a hub for local, organic food, especially during the summer months when the Kitsilano Farmer’s Market takes over the parking lot of the Kits Community Centre. Ripe harvests arrive direct from local farms and are displayed alongside meat, fish, eggs and baked goods. Unique items like beeswax candles, olive oils, spice mixes and chocolate bread are also among the dizzying delights. In the chill of winter, step into Ayoub’s Dried Fruit and Nuts on West 4th and be transported to a Middle Eastern souk. The open, airy interior is filled with rows of tall silver chalices containing imported fruit and nuts from 20 different countries; the samples are almost as irresistible as the exotic decor.

Midday

After checking out the local food scene, it’s time to get your Zen on. Kitsilano residents love their yoga, and there’s no better place to downward dog than the internationally renowned Semperviva Yoga Studio. You’ll find three studios in a seven-block radius, all offering a variety of classes including Yin, Hatha and Kundalini. Keep the vibe going with a trip to legendary athleticwear retailer Lululemon; a true Vancouver success story, the original shop is located on West 4th and the company headquarters is nearby on Cornwall Avenue.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Solly’s Bagelry on West Broadway. Solly’s offers a little taste of Jewish New York right here in Kits. Try a killer cinnamon bun (available frosted or plain and big enough to share), pastrami sammies and of course, their famous bagels topped with a shmear of cream cheese sure to put a shmile on your face. If carbs are off the list, try the soups, which are as hearty and wholesome as any Bubbie would cook.

Afternoon

Next stop is Kits Beach, popular with locals and tourists since the beginning of recorded history. Throw down a beach towel and catch some rays or stroll the Seawall to enjoy scenic views of tankers in the harbor, the tony slopes of West Vancouver, the ski hills of Grouse and Cypress, and the craggy shores of the Kits dog beach.

If the weather doesn’t scream “beach” you might prefer to spend the afternoon indoors at Drexoll Games. This cozy board game café first opened in 2002, giving local game lovers a place to unplug and geek out. Here you can try out thousands of board games, including old standbys like Chinese checkers plus new faves like Cards Against Humanity. Join a game in progress or start up your own round of tabletop fun.

Evening

An enclave of bars and bistros near Kits Beach offers endless choice when it comes to finding a place to unwind at the end of the day. Blue Martini Jazz Café on Yew Street boasts a view from the patio if weather permits; otherwise, seek cover in the elegant blue interior. Sip a signature martini, feast on a truffle cheddar baked potato, and stick around for the jazz band that starts around 7:00 pm. Check the horizon for a beach sunset on the way out for a dose of true natural beauty, Kits style.
