A patio doesn’t have to be big to be great; it only needs good food, music, beer and company. Edmonton has a ton of awesome patios – ranging from big and small – to choose from to enjoy the beautiful weather this spring and summer. Take your pick! [Image credit: iStock.com/georgecosminmarin]
A fantastic French restaurant in downtown Edmonton, The Marc has a lovely patio in the summer. Perfect for refreshing cocktails like a Mexican Mule or a house made rhubarb ginger soda or a craft beer. Finish those drinks with a dinner of Entrecote Frites, their famous, award-winning steak, which comes with foie gras butter on top and truffle mayo to complement your fries, and you have a stellar summer evening.
Famous for their widely sought-after Whyte Avenue patio, you have to get to Julio’s early and wait in line for a table. But, on a hot summer day, nothing beats a massive basketful of cheesy nachos and a bulldog – a margarita-beer cocktail. Your slushy beverage comes with a beer upside down in it. My favourite is the The Bloodhound: Stella Artois, spiced rum, Absolut mandarin and raspberry Sourpuss.
Open for brunch, lunch and dinner, and located on Whyte Avenue, Ampersand 27 is great place for a patio meal at any time of day. Enjoy a mimosa with brunch, which comes with their house made cinnamon bun; relish in a crisp kale salad or The Salty Pig pizza with a cold beer for lunch; or partake in a cocktail and charcuterie plate for dinner with friends.
The Black Dog is a place for everyone and a place for beers. Home to great music, whether live or through the sound system, the unique, laid-back vibe is a welcome refuge to all who seek a crisp, cold beer in a chill environment. And, in summer, their Wooftop garden patio provides an ambient alternative to the street level patios. The Black Dog carries a wide selection of Canadian brews – I’ll happily guzzle a pint of Blanch de Chambly, thank you.
A cozy little neighbourhood pub at the tail end of Whyte Avenue on 99 Street, The Empress Ale House is beloved by many. A woodsy room with twinkly lights and always something good to listen to – be it live music or otherwise – Empress offers an environment unlike any other pub in town. Add to that their gorgeous enclosed patio in front of the restaurant, and you’ll want to hang out with your friends and drink beer all day.
An Edmonton institution since 1943, Sugarbowl serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week in the Garneau neighbourhood. In summer, they open up their front garage doors onto their popular patio, where you can enjoy the gorgeous weather at any time of day. Known for their vast and varied beer selection, Sugarbowl is a great place to try new beers while eating delicious food like their infamous lamb burger or chicken and waffles.
Perfect for people watching, The Next Act’s tiny patio is a Whyte Avenue favourite. Whether you’re there for brunch, lunch, dinner or drinks, The Next Act offers a fabulous selection of beers, hosts an Alley Kat Cask Night on Tuesdays, and is a continual winner of the Golden Fork Awards’ Best Burger category. Plus, they have some amazing poutine and sandwiches, too.
Edmonton’s most popular smokehouse, Meat is sister to – and next door to – The Next Act Pub. Meat’s communal atmosphere extends onto their patio, where you may end up making new friends while devouring savoury brisket, ribs, pulled pork and chicken. Pair your meat with summer favourites like green beans and potato salad while polishing off a Lynchburg Lemonade, Alley Kat brew or an Old Fashioned.
