Smack dab in the centre of the Financial District and tucked away at the back of a food court sits Maman. A rustic boulangerie-patisserie isn’t what one would expect to find in such a location, but this is of little concern to Laure de La Moussaye and Othman Kacimi. Originally hailing from the capital of France, the charming duo has been drawing in the crowds since day one.

“We’ll have customers in here multiple times a day,” Laure says. “From coffee in the morning to cocktails after work.” As it turns out, Maman is just what the neighbourhood was missing.

Where to get éclairs in Toronto

Where to get éclairs in Toronto

Maman’s first location is in trendy SoHo New York but sweet-lovers of the 6 got lucky when they set up shop in Toronto’s First Canadian Place. You can find the Financial District crowd flocking to the food court for their artisanal pastries, sandwiches, soups and croissants made fresh daily (but note: it’s only open Monday to Friday for breakfast and lunch and Saturday for brunch). And if you’re thinking the food court location means bad interior vibes, guess again. Maman is sectioned off and hosts lots of white-washed light, rustic communal seating, lush greenery, and a huge patio.

Best pain au chocolat in Toronto

Best pain au chocolat in Toronto

All the way from Manhattan, Maman sells its pain au chocolat to hungry folks in the Financial District. The pastries are all made in-house, and made the traditional way. The lamination is flawless, and the chocolate centre will make any chocolate lover keep coming back for more.

New to neighbourhood: Toronto’s best new cafés from 2015

New to neighbourhood: Toronto’s best new cafés from 2015

This SoHo-born café and bakery opened a Toronto location in 2015, much to the delight of its Financial District patrons. Like a Parisian home, the decor is darling. Escape from the office and come relax with a cup of freshly brewed espresso, or cool down with an ice cream espresso floater. Start your day with a healthy breakfast like a yogurt parfait, come by for lunch items like sandwiches, soups and salads, indulge in baked French treats, or unwind with a cocktail after work. Open during the workweek from early morning to night, and on Saturdays for brunch only.
