"My Dad opened the Cheshire Cheese Inn back in 1979. He named it after Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, one of the oldest pubs on London's Fleet Street," says Alan Cassidy, the inn's current owner. While 1979 seems almost historic by North American standards, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese was completely destroyed in the 1666 Great Fire of London and rebuilt the following year.
"Dad created this quaint, low ceilinged and incredibly smoky place in those days," says Alan. "He missed the atmosphere of a British pub when he emigrated from Liverpool. He wanted to create a place that gave people a taste of home. His early customers were mostly British expats missing the same experience, so we became a sort of local for the neighbourhood."
The Cheshire Cheese Inn goes one step further in offering a taste of England, also serving up traditional British-style food. "We have steak and kidney pudding, toad in the hole, cottage pie, and fish and chips with the fish battered daily. It's like a touch of home."
